Strolling around Vernazza you see the colorful facades and the laundry hanging out the windows. I read the houses were painted in different vibrant colors because each fisherman wanted to be able to see their house from afar to make sure their wives were at home. Don't know how the color of the houses helped but that's what I read.
Vernazza is one of the five cities that comprise the Cinque Terre in Italy. This collection of cities or villages whichever you prefer is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site.
